About St Joachim's Roman Catholic Church, Malcolm Street, Wick
St Joachim’s Roman Catholic Church stands on Malcolm Street in Wick, Highland. It remains a place of worship within a parish that also encompasses St Anne’s Church in Thurso and a chapel at Talmine. The church is protected as a Category B listed building.
Catholic worship in Wick revived after Irish seasonal workers arrived during the growth of the herring trade. Father Walter Lovi began serving this community in 1832 and gained local support through his care for people affected by cholera. He spent four years gathering money for a permanent church, which opened in 1836. Iron gates were later erected in response to anti-Catholic hostility and remained until 1971. From 1860, the church administered the Arctic Mission for six years, during which a settled congregation began to develop. It was dedicated to St Joachim in 1861. The Catholic population later increased through Italian immigration in the 1920s and the arrival of workers connected with Dounreay from the mid-1950s.
