About Hilton of Cadboll Chapel
Hilton of Cadboll Chapel is a ruined medieval place of worship dedicated to the Virgin Mary, located in the Dornoch area of Highland. Overlooking the Moray Firth, the site is a scheduled monument. Its surviving elements include the chapel foundations, burial areas and low banks covered by turf. It has been under state care since 1978.
Probably built during the 13th century, the church served both worshippers and the surrounding burial ground. Its rectangular plan measures roughly 12 by 6.5 metres and runs from east to west. Large sandstone blocks, shell-based mortar and a rubble core formed the walls. Evidence of Pictish activity and burials dating from about 650 to 900 indicates much earlier use of the site. A replica of the carved Pictish cross-slab known as the Hilton of Cadboll Stone stands nearby, while the original is held in Edinburgh.
