About East Church, Inverness
East Church, Inverness is a former Church of Scotland parish church in Inverness, Highland. The building is protected at Category B. Its congregation united with Inshes Church following plans announced in 2022, and the last service took place on 5 March 2023. A charity, Cultarlann Inbhir Nis, purchased the property in 2024 with the aim of establishing a Gaelic cultural centre.
The church began in 1798 as an additional place of worship serving an existing parish. It separated from the Church of Scotland in 1843, later joining the United Free Church before returning to the national denomination in 1929. The structure underwent rebuilding between 1852 and 1853. Ross & Macbeth designed the frontage facing the street, which was constructed in 1897–98 and accounts for the directory’s 1898 building date. The former parish covered part of central Inverness alongside Longman, Drakies and Raigmore.
