About Dornoch Cathedral

Dornoch Cathedral is an active Church of Scotland parish church in Dornoch, Highland. Although it retains its historic title, it no longer has cathedral status. Formerly a Roman Catholic cathedral and the base of the Bishops of Caithness, the church is now protected as a Category A listed building. Its burial ground borders Dornoch Castle, which incorporates reconstructed remains of the bishops’ medieval residence.

Founded by Gilbert de Moravia, later known as Saint Gilbert of Dornoch, the church was erected in 1224 during the rule of Alexander II. It suffered severe fire damage amid local conflict in 1570. William Burn directed extensive restoration from 1835 to 1837, replacing the surviving medieval aisled nave with a narrower, pillarless structure. Further alterations in 1924–26 exposed interior masonry and formed a Sutherland family burial space with substantial marble memorials. An organ donated by Andrew Carnegie was installed in 1893 and later enlarged.
