About St. Stephen's Church

St. Stephen's Church stands on Watling Street, south of central St Albans in Hertfordshire, near the summit of St Stephen’s Hill. It remains an active Anglican parish church within the Diocese of St Albans and is protected as a Grade II* listed building.

Its origins probably lie in the mid-tenth century, when it was established to welcome pilgrims approaching the shrine of St Alban. A surviving deeply recessed window may date from around 950. The church was expanded in the early twelfth century, with a northern aisle added later that century, while extensive fifteenth-century alterations included higher nave walls, a clerestory, an enlarged chancel and a belfry. Built mainly of flint with stone and reused Roman brick, the largely medieval structure was rescued from serious decay by George Gilbert Scott during the 1860s. Notable features include a late fifteenth-century octagonal font, a thirteenth-century double piscina, Victorian woodwork and bells recast in 1957.
