About Swanwick Shore Strict Baptist Chapel
Swanwick Shore Strict Baptist Chapel is a Baptist place of worship on Bridge Road in the Southampton area of Hampshire. Located in Lower Swanwick, it remains in continuous religious use and is protected as a Grade II listed building for its historic and architectural interest.
The congregation began meeting in homes before moving to a converted wooden boat shed in 1835. Prone to flooding and overcrowding, the shed was replaced by the present chapel in 1844, with help from local boatyard owner John Moody. The modest single-storey building combines red and grey brick laid in Flemish bond with a slate roof. Its symmetrical front includes a central double doorway, two recessed blind arches and a gable stone recording the chapel’s construction date. A smaller rendered vestry was added behind the main building during the 1870s, while later alterations have been limited.
