About St Joseph's Catholic Church

St Joseph’s Catholic Church serves a Roman Catholic parish in central Southampton, Hampshire. It stands on Bugle Street, close to Town Quay, and is protected at Grade II. The parish is now united with neighbouring St Edmund’s, while the attached Stella Maris Pastoral Centre provides space for parish gatherings and local groups.

Catholic worship in Southampton was revived by French refugees in the late eighteenth century, initially in private and later in a High Street chapel. A church was established in 1830, the first Catholic foundation in the city following the Reformation. Growing numbers prompted a replacement: Augustus Pugin designed the chancel, completed in 1843, while local architect J. G. Poole designed the nave. The finished church opened in 1845. It briefly acted as Portsmouth’s pro-cathedral in 1882. Leonard Stokes enlarged and renovated the building in 1888, and further restoration followed in 1981.
