About Shirley Baptist Church
Shirley Baptist Church is a Baptist place of worship on Church Street in the Shirley district of Southampton, Hampshire. Established in 1852, the church belongs to the Baptist Union of Great Britain.
The first chapel was built in 1852 on previously unused land in Church Street. During the ministry of the Reverend Edgar Pullen, from 1889 until 1930, membership grew substantially and approached 500 people. A larger building was therefore erected during the First World War to provide space for the expanded congregation. The present church opened in 1915. Economist John Harry Dunning attended briefly after arriving in Southampton in 1952, while he lived in lodgings nearby, before later transferring to Thornhill Baptist Church after moving to that area.
