St Lawrence Church is an active Anglican parish church in Church Street, Alton, Hampshire. The Grade I listed church contains work from several architectural periods and has a significant place in local history. Fighting at the close of the English Civil War’s Battle of Alton reached the building.
An Anglo-Saxon church probably once occupied the site, although only an early stone font survives from that tradition. The existing building began in the Norman era, traditionally around 1070. Its early fabric includes four substantial arches made from stone believed to have been quarried at Selborne or Binsted. Carvings on their supports depict creatures, angels and other figures. The building was enlarged during the 1100s as the town became more prosperous, and the Lady Chapel was constructed beyond the tower in the following century. During restoration in 1868, the old font was removed; it returned in 1934 and has again served for baptisms since 1950.
