About Llaniestyn

Llaniestyn is a medieval church near Llanddona in eastern Anglesey, Gwynedd. Set within a rural churchyard, it remains an active parish church and belongs to a group of seven churches. The building is Grade II* listed, reflecting its considerable age and the survival of important historic fabric and furnishings.

Tradition associates the site with St Iestyn, who is believed to have founded a religious community there during the seventh century. The earliest surviving sections of the present church are from the twelfth century, while the chancel was enlarged during the fourteenth century and a south transept added in the sixteenth. Built mainly from rubble stone and roofed with slate, it has whitewashed interior walls and a small bellcote at the western end. Restorations in 1865 included roof renewal, with further work undertaken in 1954. Notable features include a twelfth-century font and a carved fourteenth-century memorial depicting St Iestyn.
