About St Peter's Church, Westleigh

St Peter’s Church, Westleigh stands on Firs Lane in the Westleigh district of Leigh, Greater Manchester. It remains a functioning Church of England parish church within the Diocese of Manchester. Recognised for its architectural importance, the church has Grade II* listed status.

Construction began in 1879, with completion and consecration following in 1881. Designed by the Lancaster architectural practice Sharpe, Paley and Austin, the building is formed from red brick, detailed with Runcorn sandstone and covered by slate roofing. Its arrangement includes a nave of three bays, a northern aisle, chancel, vestry, porch and central tower. The tower is topped by a pyramid-shaped roof and features buttresses and bell openings. Inside, round sandstone columns support the nave arcade. Notable furnishings include a carved stone reredos, an ornate alabaster pulpit formerly housed at Manchester Cathedral, and a font with green marble shafts. Abbott and Company of Lancaster created the east window’s stained glass in 1949.
