About St Mary the Virgin
St Mary the Virgin is an active Anglican parish church near Civic Square in the heart of Leigh, Greater Manchester. It forms part of the Manchester diocese and the local Salford and Leigh deanery. Its Grade II* designation reflects its considerable historic and architectural significance.
Christian worship on the site is documented from the thirteenth century, though the original foundation date is unknown. The dedication changed from St Peter to its present form towards the close of the fourteenth century. Paley and Austin rebuilt most of the church between 1871 and 1873, preserving the tower, which was constructed around 1500. The present structure is sandstone, designed in a Perpendicular-influenced Gothic Revival manner, with a nave of six bays, a two-bay chancel, clerestory and embattled parapet. Surviving details include studded oak entrance doors from the sixteenth century and a set of eight eighteenth-century bells made by Abel Rudhall.
