About Christ Church, Pennington

Christ Church, Pennington is an active Church of England parish church in Leigh, Greater Manchester. It serves Pennington and belongs to the Leigh Deanery, within the Salford Archdeaconry and Diocese of Manchester. The church is protected as a Grade II listed building.

The parish was formed from the historic parish of Leigh despite opposition from its vicar, James Irvine. Supporters included Lord Lilford, silk manufacturer James Pownall and the Revd James Hewlett of Astley, who assisted with fundraising. Completed in 1854 to a Gothic Revival design by Edwin Hugh Shellard, the building is constructed from dressed sandstone, with finer ashlar details and slate roofing. It has a nave of six bays, a two-bay chancel, south porch and a three-level castellated western tower with diagonal supports and pinnacles. Inside, octagonal columns carry the nave arcades, while an arcaded gallery occupies the west end.
