About St Mary the Virgin

St Mary the Virgin is a Church of England parish church in Welling, Greater London, dedicated to Mary. It belongs to Southwark Diocese and the Archdeaconry of Lewisham and Greenwich. Although not nationally listed, the church has appeared on Bexley’s register of locally important buildings since 2011.

A mission hall opened in 1934 to serve a growing population, but wartime conditions delayed a permanent building. Designed in 1954 by diocesan architect Thomas Ford, the present church opened the following year. Its brick exterior draws on Italian Romanesque architecture, while the interior reflects Greek Revival influences associated with Sir John Soane. Notable artworks include Augustus Lunn’s sgraffito depicting episodes from the life of Mary, Hans Feibusch’s Ascension mural, stained glass by Claire Dawson and a limewood Virgin and Child by Philip Bentham. A separate campanile contains one bell, while the four-manual Mander organ dates from 1955.
