About St Mark's Church, Hadlow Down
St Mark’s Church, Hadlow Down is a Church of England parish church in the East Sussex village of Hadlow Down. Dedicated to St Mark the Evangelist, it remains the village’s sole place of worship. The church is protected as a Grade II listed building in recognition of its historic and architectural significance.
The church was established after local resident Benjamin Hall sought support in 1834 for a chapel serving villagers who lived several miles from existing parish churches. Construction began in 1835, and the completed building was consecrated by Archbishop William Howley in May 1836. Built of stone, it has a simple nave and chancel, with a buttressed western tower crowned by a slender spire. George Fellowes Prynne was the architect. The church was enlarged in 1913, and its churchyard is managed as a nature reserve.
