About Providence Chapel, Hadlow Down
Providence Chapel, Hadlow Down is a former Calvinistic place of worship in Hadlow Down, East Sussex. Now converted into a private home, it retains its former burial ground and is protected as a Grade II listed building. The chapel remained in religious use until suffering serious damage during the Great Storm of 1987.
Nonconformist worship began on the site in 1824, when local builder and Wesleyan Methodist Henry Smith erected a chapel chiefly used by Baptists. The present structure replaced it in 1849. It is a square, two-storey building combining red brick with glazed grey-blue brickwork. Classical details include pilasters and a pediment, while the three-bay front has sash windows and a central double entrance beneath a rounded fanlight. A circular stone panel in the pediment records the chapel’s name, construction date and initials associated with its minister, James Hallett.
