About Church of St Edward the Confessor (Roman Catholic)
The Church of St Edward the Confessor is an active Roman Catholic parish church in central Romford, Greater London. Standing on St Edward’s Way beside the town hall and central library, it has served as a separate parish since 1918. The church is protected as a Grade II listed building and also has a parish centre.
Catholic worship in Romford began in a private home in 1848, followed by a temporary chapel and the establishment of a resident mission. The present Gothic Revival church was completed in 1856 to designs by Daniel Cubitt Nichols. William Petre, 12th Baron Petre, provided the site and funded the building. His sister Agnes Clifford supplied interior furnishings, including the high altar, reredos, statues and stained glass. Richard Lockwood Boulton produced the sculpture, while Hardman & Co made the windows. Cardinal Wiseman opened and dedicated the church on 6 May 1856. Its dedication recalls Edward the Confessor’s association with nearby Havering-atte-Bower.
