About St Mark's Church, Royal Tunbridge Wells
St Mark’s Church, Royal Tunbridge Wells, serves the Church of England parish of Broadwater Down in Kent and holds regular Sunday services. Part of the Diocese of Rochester since 1991, the church is designated Grade II* for its architectural and historic significance.
William Nevill, 4th Earl of Abergavenny, paid for the church and its parsonage while developing his nearby estate. His wife laid the foundation stone in 1864, and the building was consecrated in 1866. Robert Lewis Roumieu designed it in a French-influenced form of late Gothic Revival architecture, using stone from the Earl’s quarries and Bath stone for carved details. The 130-foot spire is a prominent feature, while the interior contains a Caen stone font and pulpit. Memorial stained glass commemorates the Earl through images of four principal prophets and the four Evangelists. Public donations funded tower bells and chimes marking Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee, first sounded in 1898.
