The church occupies ground once used by a chapel associated with Havering Palace. This predecessor was dedicated to St Mary and served as one element of the palace buildings. It was pulled down in 1876, before the present church took its place on the same ground. The location therefore retains a direct connection with the former palace chapel and its earlier religious use.
