About Wanstead United Reformed Church
Wanstead United Reformed Church stands on Nightingale Lane in Wanstead, east London, and serves as a place of worship within the Presbyterian tradition. The building has been protected at Grade II since 2009, reflecting its historical and architectural significance.
John Johnson designed the structure, which was erected from 1856 to 1861 for the Anglican parish of St Luke in St Pancras. Its first home was beside Midland Road and Euston Road, but construction of the Midland Railway terminus at St Pancras meant that it could not remain there. The fabric was dismantled, transferred to Wanstead and reconstructed during 1866 and 1867. Johnson revised his original scheme for the new setting. The Wanstead sale realised £526, with compensation paid by the railway later contributing towards another church in Kentish Town.
