About Finsbury Chapel
Finsbury Chapel was a church in Finsbury, London, within Greater London. Associated with Presbyterian tradition through its founder, a Church of Scotland minister, it was established as a Congregational chapel. It occupied a site on the southern side of East Street and was originally called Fletcher’s Chapel.
Alexander Fletcher founded the church in 1825. It later became notable for its exceptional capacity and, at the height of its prominence, was regarded as London’s largest chapel. Its scale made it a significant place of worship in nineteenth-century Finsbury, although the surviving account gives no architectural details or information about later alterations.
