About St Peter's Church
St Peter’s Church is an active Church of England parish church in Streatham, within the London Borough of Lambeth. Set on elevated ground beside Leigham Court Road, it forms a prominent local landmark. The church is protected as a Grade II* listed building.
The parish was established in 1870, when the first section of Richard Drew’s church was consecrated by Samuel Wilberforce, then Bishop of Winchester. George Fellowes Prynne designed an enlargement completed in 1886–87. Coloured brick, clay-tiled roofs, turrets, varied windows and a large circular west window create an irregular, picturesque exterior. Wartime bombing destroyed much of the stained glass and an external turret, although the four-manual William Hill & Sons organ escaped damage. Lawrence Lee later reinstated the west window and designed further glass, including nine sanctuary windows. A late-1980s reordering moved the altar to the former baptistry, while the eastern section became a day chapel.
