About St Patrick's
St Patrick’s, at 26 Cornwall Road in Waterloo, is an active London parish of the Roman Catholic Church. Conventual Franciscan friars have served the parish since 1964, supported by a nearby friary that acts as their administrative centre for Britain. This is the order’s only London church, and Mass is celebrated each weekend.
Frederick Walters designed the building, which opened in 1897 to provide a chapel and school for local Catholics. It is a Victorian interpretation of Romanesque architecture, with the worship space above the school accommodation. At first, clergy travelled from St George’s Cathedral in Southwark to conduct Mass. Surviving drawings reveal that Walters initially intended the church to occupy the lower storey, with the school overhead and an adjoining tower. The arrangement was changed during development, although the reason is not recorded.
