About St Matthew's
St Matthew’s is a Church of England parish church on North Common Road in Ealing, London, facing Ealing Common. Consecrated in 1884, it remains an Anglican place of worship and has been protected as a Grade II listed building since 2014. Its notable interior craftsmanship and well-preserved Gothic Revival character contributed to its designation.
The parish began in 1872, with worship initially held in a temporary iron structure at Grange Park. Alfred Jowers designed the permanent red-brick church, using sandstone detailing, steep slate roofs and Geometrical Gothic forms. Work started in 1881, and the building was planned for 935 worshippers. The unusually shaped donated site led to a south-west to north-east alignment. Inside are a broad nave, a German-carved wooden reredos showing the Last Supper, and stained glass by Edward Frampton and Arts and Crafts artist Reginald Hallward. Hallward also created the oak screen commemorating local people who died during the First World War. The pipe organ was built by James Walker & Sons in 1884.
