About St Mary's
St Mary’s is an active Church of England place of worship at 245 Old Marylebone Road, near Bryanston Square in London. Dedicated to the Virgin Mary, it belongs to the evangelical tradition and has housed its present congregation since 2002. The church holds Grade I listed status, the highest level of statutory protection.
Constructed in 1823–24 as a Commissioners’ church, the building closes the view from the southern end of Bryanston Square. Robert Smirke provided the design, using brick with prominent stone elements. Its exterior is distinguished by a curved portico, a circular tower and a modest dome crowned by a cross. The project cost £19,955, with £14,955 supplied by the Church Building Commission. The church later appeared as the fictional Saint Jude’s in the 2019 film *Last Christmas*.
