About St Mary and St Michael Church

St Mary and St Michael Church is a Roman Catholic parish serving London’s Tower Hamlets, with its home at 2 Lukin Street. The parish remains in use within the Diocese of Westminster. Its historic and architectural importance is recognised through Grade II listing.

The present building dates from 1852 to 1856 and, on completion, surpassed London’s other Roman Catholic churches in size. William Wardell, who trained with Augustus Pugin, planned the church in a Gothic Revival manner shaped by his teacher’s ideas. Its earliest parish priest, Father James Webb, was the last English priest pursued under the country’s former Penal Laws. From 1904 until 1941, the parish was headed by Canon Timothy Ring, a prominent East End clergyman. Clement Attlee attended Ring’s funeral.
