St Martin’s serves the Church of England community in Gospel Oak, within Greater London, and stands on Vicar’s Road. Dating from the Victorian period, the church is protected at Grade I, reflecting its considerable architectural importance.
Edward Buckton Lamb created the highly individual design, which was realised during 1864–66. John Derby Allcroft paid for its construction as a tribute to his deceased wife. The building is particularly distinguished by its tower and striking pinnacles, whose form evokes a fanciful castle. Wartime bombing damaged these features, and they were subsequently taken down. A later restoration reinstated the pinnacles, with the project reaching completion in 2015. Architectural historians have noted the church’s unusual appearance, including Nikolaus Pevsner, who regarded it as exceptionally eccentric among Victorian ecclesiastical buildings in London.
