About St Luke's Church, West Norwood

St Luke’s Church, West Norwood is an active Church of England parish church in London, Greater London. The Grade II listed building occupies a prominent triangular plot near the southern end of Norwood Road, where the route divides into Knights Hill and Norwood High Street.

Francis Octavius Bedford designed the church in 1822, following legislation intended to provide churches for a growing population after the Napoleonic Wars. Built partly with public funding, it was completed in brick with stone details and consecrated in 1825. Its main façade has a restrained Corinthian-style portico with six fluted columns, with a three-stage tower rising behind it. An unusual north-to-south alignment resulted from local planning restrictions. G. E. Street substantially remodelled the interior in 1872–73, removing the galleries, forming a conventional chancel and adding Romanesque arcades beneath a plaster barrel-vaulted ceiling. Stained glass was introduced at various dates.
