About St Leonard's Church

St Leonard’s Church is an active Church of England parish church in Streatham, within the London Borough of Lambeth. It stands beside Streatham High Road, near the meeting of Tooting Bec Gardens and Mitcham Lane. The church is protected as a Grade II listed building and serves a parish whose historic boundaries once extended into present-day Balham and Tooting Bec.

Medieval fabric survives in the base of the tower, dating from the 14th century. Inside are a 15th-century font, historic brasses and memorials, and a damaged knightly figure beneath a medieval canopy. Joseph T. Parkinson rebuilt most of the church in 1830–31, while the tower top and spire were renewed after lightning damage in 1841. A stone chancel designed by William Dyce followed in 1863. After a severe fire in 1975, the interior was restored with new seating, an organ, stone paving and a Chapel of Unity.
