About St Ignatius Church, Stamford Hill
St Ignatius Church, Stamford Hill is an active Roman Catholic parish church in north London, within the Archdiocese of Westminster. Standing near the meeting of Stamford Hill, St Ann’s Road and Tottenham High Road, it is served by the Jesuits and has a diverse congregation. The church is protected as a Grade II-listed building.
The Jesuits established the parish in 1894 after local Catholics requested a church and schools. Early services took place in a nearby house, with its outbuildings later adapted as a chapel. Benedict Williamson designed the permanent church, dedicated to St Ignatius of Loyola. Built in stages, its sanctuary opened in 1903, the exterior was finished in 1911, and work inside continued until 1925. Notable features include colourful opus sectile images depicting Christ’s birth and the Sacred Heart, the Stations of the Cross, the surviving high altar and communion rails, and a three-manual Compton organ. St Joseph’s chapel commemorates parishioners killed during the First World War.
