About St Etheldreda's

St Etheldreda’s is an active Roman Catholic church at 14 Ely Place, near Charterhouse Street in Holborn, London. This Grade I listed building is used for Mass, baptisms, weddings and funerals. Its dedication recalls Etheldreda, the Anglo-Saxon saint associated with the foundation of the monastery at Ely.

The church was probably built in 1284–86 as the London chapel of the Bishops of Ely and formed part of their residence. It is a two-level example of early Decorated Gothic architecture, comprising a spacious upper chapel and a crypt below. Notable details include bar tracery, an unusual intersecting design in the east window, and large framed recesses intended for statues. After Georgian alterations in the 18th century, George Gilbert Scott restored the crypt and upper chapel towards their medieval appearance following the Catholic purchase of 1874. The building reopened for Catholic worship in 1878.
