Saint Monica's stands at Hoxton Square in London and serves as a Roman Catholic parish. Founded under Augustinian care for Catholics living nearby, it continues to hold regular Masses. The building is listed at Grade II.
Cardinal Nicholas Wiseman asked the Augustinians to begin the Hoxton mission in August 1864. Edward Hearn, Westminster’s vicar general, set the first stone in place the following month. E. W. Pugin drew up the plans, with construction undertaken by Oxborn, a Clapton builder. Although worship began there in May 1865, further work followed, including enlargement of the church and construction of an adjacent priory. The finished building was inaugurated on St Monica’s feast day in 1866. Franz Mayer of Munich produced a reredos fitted in 1875, and John Young designed the Lady Chapel added in 1880.
