About Roman Catholic Church of St Mary

The Roman Catholic Church of St Mary is an active parish church in Blackheath, within the Royal Borough of Greenwich in London. Also dedicated to Our Lady Help of Christians, it stands in Cresswell Park near Lee Road and Blackheath station. The church is protected as a Grade II listed building.

The parish developed from a chapel established for a Catholic orphanage by the Reverend Dr William Gowan Todd in 1870. Local worshippers began attending Mass there, and it became Blackheath’s Catholic mission in 1873. The present Gothic Revival church was designed by Alfred Edward Purdie and constructed between 1890 and 1891, with support from Charles Butler and his family. Bishop John Butt opened it on 1 July 1891. Side altars followed in 1894, while Hardman & Co installed stained glass throughout the building by 1900. Bishop Peter Amigo consecrated the church in 1906.
