About Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin, Leyton
The Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin, Leyton is an active Anglican parish church in Leyton, east London. Its present dedication also includes St Edward and St Luke, and its worship belongs to the Church of England’s Evangelical tradition. The building is recognised for its special architectural and historic importance with Grade II* protection.
Two priests were recorded at Leyton in 1086, suggesting an earlier place of worship, although documentary evidence for the church begins around 1200. Centuries of alteration have produced a building from several periods. Its earliest remaining structure is the red-brick tower of 1658, built when its medieval predecessor became unsafe. Most of the fabric dates from the nineteenth century, including John Shaw’s southern aisle with distinctive Y-tracery windows. Later changes brought stained glass, a baptistery, an oak screen and a memorial altarpiece showing the Last Supper. A substantial restoration started in 1929, wartime damage was repaired during 1951, and further alterations followed the 1995 fire. Historic memorials include work by sculptor John Flaxman.
