About Our Lady of Sorrows, Peckham
Our Lady of Sorrows, Peckham is a Roman Catholic parish church in Peckham, south London. Founded by Capuchin friars, it remains an active place of worship and has served as the British home of the Norbertine canons since 2022. The church and adjoining friary form a Grade II listed complex.
Bishop Thomas Grant invited the Capuchins to Peckham in 1854, and land was acquired two years later. A school and temporary chapels preceded the permanent church designed by E. W. Pugin. Its foundation stone dates from 1859, although financial constraints delayed the opening until 1866. Built in the Gothic style, the church uses London stock brick beneath a sloping slate roof. Notable details include rose windows, Pugin’s original high altar, an organ gallery and two chapels beside the sanctuary. The west-end chapel contains a replica of Michelangelo’s Pietà and memorial panels recording deceased members of the community.
