About Corpus Christi Church, Brixton
Corpus Christi Church, Brixton is an active Roman Catholic parish in the London Borough of Lambeth, under the Archdiocese of Southwark. The Grade II* listed church holds approximately 300 worshippers. Its parish includes HM Prison Brixton, where clergy celebrate a Saturday Mass for prisoners and employees.
The parish developed from a Catholic mission begun in 1880 by Henrik van Doorne, a Flemish priest who purchased a house and converted it into a chapel. John Francis Bentley received the commission for a more substantial building in 1885 and chose a plot occupied by Bethel House, near the junction of Brixton Hill with Horsford Road. Southwark’s bishop, John Butt, set its foundation stone in place during July 1886, before opening the building in June 1887. Limited finances restricted the original scheme to the sanctuary, a pair of chapels and the sacristy; transepts followed in 1904. Jesuits later managed the parish until 2005, when responsibility reverted to the archdiocese.
