About Church of St Philip, Park Town Estate

The Church of St Philip, Park Town Estate is a Grade II listed church in Battersea, south London. Formerly Anglican, it is now affiliated with and owned by the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. It is known today as St Mary of Debre Tsion, a name referring to the Debre Tsion monastery on Tulu Gudo Island in Ethiopia’s Lake Zway.

Designed for the Park Town Estate by Sir James Knowles, the church was constructed by Colls & Sons and opened in 1870. Its Anglican parish united with St Bartholomew’s in Wickersley Road in 1972, and later with the Ascension at Lavender Hill in 2000. A William Hill & Sons organ formerly stood in the building, but was moved to Reading School’s chapel in 1992. The Ethiopian congregation began renting the church in the early 2000s, before purchasing it in 2010, three years after the Church of England declared it redundant.
