About Church of St Michael and All Angels

The Church of St Michael and All Angels is an active Anglican parish church near London Fields in Hackney, Greater London. It belongs to the Church of England and has been protected at Grade II since 2006. Its significance lies in its carefully conceived modern architecture and closely coordinated works of art.

The parish dates from the 1860s, when population growth reshaped north-eastern London. An earlier Gothic building in Lamb Lane suffered severe damage from a V-2 strike in 1945 and was subsequently cleared. Nugent Francis Cachemaille-Day planned the present church, which was constructed at a different location in 1959–61. It has a square footprint, walls of red engineering bricks and a domed roof made from reinforced concrete. There is no bell tower, and the compact arrangement brings the congregation near the altar. John Hayward supplied the decorative artwork, including murals fitted during 1961–62. Conservation of his nine wall paintings was finished in 2010.
