About Church of St Michael
The Church of St Michael is a Church of England parish church in Highgate, in north London. Located at the edge of Highgate Cemetery, it is London’s most elevated church and is protected at Grade II* level. Its spire is a recognisable local landmark, visible from Parliament Hill and Hampstead Heath.
Lewis Vulliamy designed the Gothic Revival building, which was constructed in 1831 where Ashhurst House had previously stood. Following a delay caused by a dispute over parish boundaries, it was consecrated in November 1832. George Edmund Street enlarged and renovated the church in 1880, while Temple Moore carried out additional work in 1903. Repairs began in 1946 after wartime bombing two years earlier. Evie Hone created some of the replacement stained glass. Other details include heraldic carvings by the west doorway, surviving fabric from Ashhurst House and a wine cellar dating from the seventeenth century beneath the church. Samuel Taylor Coleridge and relatives are buried there.
