About Church of St Mary, Acton, London

The Church of St Mary, Acton, London serves as an Anglican parish church in Acton, within Ealing borough. It is dedicated to the Visitation of St Mary and forms part of the Diocese of London. The building has held Grade II status since 1981.

Acton had a place of worship bearing St Mary’s name by 1231, and its medieval fabric underwent repeated repairs and changes. Following remodelling in 1837, nearly all of the older structure was removed in 1865. Horace Francis planned its replacement in the Decorated Gothic manner, using red brick accented with stone. Construction took place from 1865 to 1867, with consecration by Oxford’s bishop, Samuel Wilberforce, on 16 May 1866. The retained tower was replaced in 1876 and fitted with a new clock. Memorials preserved from the former building include those for poet Anne Southwell, benefactor John Perryn and actress Elizabeth Barry.
