About Church of St Laurence and Community Centre

The Church of St Laurence and Community Centre is an active Church of England parish church in Catford, within the London Borough of Lewisham. Serving its congregation in south-east London, the church has been protected at Grade II since 2010 in recognition of its architectural significance.

The parish dates from the late Victorian expansion of the area. Its original Gothic Revival building was consecrated in 1887, but was later replaced when the former site was required for an enlargement of Lewisham Town Hall. Ralph Covell of Covell, Matthews & Partners designed the present church, which opened in 1968. Dark engineering brick and reinforced concrete give the low octagonal structure its Brutalist character. Inside, worshippers gather around a central altar beneath an eight-part concrete roof and glazed oculus. Abstract multicoloured glass by W. T. Carter Shapland lights seven walls, while the bell and a First World War memorial window were transferred from the earlier building. A Lady Chapel and adjoining community hall complete the complex.
