About Church of St John the Baptist, Leytonstone

The Church of St John the Baptist, Leytonstone is a Church of England parish church on the High Road in Leytonstone, east London. Dating from the 19th century, it remains the local Anglican parish church and has Grade II listed status.

It replaced a smaller chapel that had served Leytonstone from 1749. Edward Blore designed the present church, whose foundation stone was placed in July 1832 before its consecration in October 1833. Built in an Early English Gothic manner, it uses yellow brick accented with stone. The original arrangement comprised a nave, compact sanctuary and a three-stage western bell tower crowned by pinnacles, with room for around 600 worshippers. Six bells made at the Whitechapel Bell Foundry were presented by William Davis and named for women from the Davis and Cotton families. A distinct parish was established in 1845.
