About Church of Our Lady of Grace
The Church of Our Lady of Grace is a Roman Catholic parish church in Charlton, within the Royal Borough of Greenwich in London. Diocesan priests have served the parish since 1989, following many decades of ministry by the Assumptionists. The church also retains links with the neighbouring Catholic primary school founded by the parish in 1928.
Constructed in 1905–06 for the Oblates of the Assumption, the church was designed by French architect Eugène-Jacques Gervais in an uncommon neo-Romanesque style. Its fabric combines brickwork, stone detailing and a slate roof, with reinforced concrete used extensively for the arches, columns and vaulting. Inside, a barrel-vaulted nave extends across five bays, while circular quatrefoils display emblems associated with the Litany of Loreto. Major work in 1959 strengthened the foundations, added a northern aisle, altered the high altar and renewed the decoration. The completed church was consecrated in September 1960.
