About Christ Church, Southgate
Christ Church, Southgate is an active Anglican parish on Waterfall Road in Southgate, London. The Grade II* listed church follows a liberal Catholic tradition and joined the Inclusive Church network in 2014. Its mixed choir supports Sunday worship, including the Parish Eucharist and Choral Evensong, while also giving concerts, making recordings and touring.
The present church was built after the earlier Weld Chapel became inadequate for the local congregation. The Walker family provided the site, and George Gilbert Scott designed the building, which was consecrated on 17 July 1862. It contains London’s most extensive group of Pre-Raphaelite stained-glass windows produced by Morris’s firm, with designs by figures including William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones. Other notable features include Clayton and Bell glass, an 1868 mosaic reredos showing the Last Supper, and Lady Chapel murals created in 1905–06. The churchyard contains the Walker family burial vault, including the graves of seven brothers known for cricket.
