About Christ Church
Christ Church is a Church of England church at 620 High Road in North Finchley, London. It is an evangelical Christian community and occupies a Grade II listed building.
Henry Stephens came to North Finchley in 1864, initially working as a missionary among local residents, including railway workers following the arrival of the railway. He regularly preached outdoors and later supervised construction of the church, which commenced in 1867. Stephens also established a school that subsequently became Wren Academy, as well as the nearby church of St Barnabas. A memorial tablet inside Christ Church commemorates his ministry. Another notable feature is the font cover, carved in memory of congregation member Catherine Ironside. She left Finchley to work as a medical missionary in Esfahan, Iran, and died during the 1922 Asian flu pandemic. Its design reflects the decorative tradition associated with Esfahan.
