About Christ Church
Christ Church is an active Anglican parish church in Highbury, within the London Borough of Islington and close to Highbury Fields. It belongs to the Diocese of London and has an open evangelical identity. The building is protected at Grade II. Worship incorporates both older hymns and newer music, and the church has also accommodated neighbourhood singing groups. Its local ministry has included winter overnight provision for people without homes.
John Dawes, a nearby landowner and benefactor, provided the ground for the church. Designed by Thomas Allom, it was constructed during 1847 and 1848, opening in the latter year. Allom arranged the interior around a cross-shaped ground plan, comprising a wide nave, shallow chancel, projecting arms and an ample eight-sided central junction. This configuration supported the clear delivery of sermons. An upper seating level was added in 1872, while rooms serving children and social gatherings were created in 1980.
