About Christ Church

Christ Church is a Church of England parish church in Hampstead Square, London, with close ties to Hampstead’s historic village and nearby Heath. Completed in 1852 and now protected as a Grade II listed building, it was also the setting for the marriage of former Prime Minister Clement Attlee and Violet Millar.

Samuel Daukes designed the present building, constructed from 1850 to 1852 in an Early English Gothic manner. Kentish ragstone forms the main fabric, complemented by Portland stone detailing and roofs of slate. Sir Gilbert Scott added a wooden gallery in 1860, although it was removed during the 1960s. Ewan Christian designed the north aisle and porch, built in 1881–82. An eight-bell ring was installed in 2005, combining four bells transferred from Cowley in Oxford with four newly cast at the Whitechapel Bell Foundry. The original 1857 Henry Willis organ was later replaced by a smaller tracker-action instrument.
