About St Theodore's Roman Catholic Church, Hampton
St Theodore's Roman Catholic Church, Hampton serves a Catholic parish from Station Road in Hampton, part of the borough of Richmond upon Thames. The church remains a place of regular worship, with Mass celebrated on Sundays, selected weekday mornings and Wednesday evenings, as well as on Saturday evenings.
Catholic services in Hampton date to 1897, when Michael Farmer created a worship space within his Avenue Road house. Edmund Farmer, his priest son, was authorised by Cardinal Vaughan to celebrate publicly accessible Mass there. After alterations in 1918 accommodated a larger congregation, the diocese purchased Walnut Tree Cottage on Station Road in 1923. A supposedly short-term timber and asbestos church followed in 1927 but served for close to six decades. Designed by Austin Winkley, the current building was completed in November 1986 and formally consecrated by Cardinal Basil Hume on 22 March 1987. Patrick Reyntiens created its stained glass, while David John produced the wooden sculpture.
