About Our Lady of the Angels Church, Erith

Our Lady of the Angels Church, Erith is an active Roman Catholic parish at the meeting of Bexley Road and Carlton Road. Capuchin friars continue to serve the congregation, making it the capital’s sole Catholic church under their pastoral care.

The Capuchins began their work in Erith in 1867, when Father Maurice formed a mission and held Mass in a home on Cross Street. Their friary at the present location opened in 1903, and worship later took place in a 1920s hall and a chapel within the friary. Construction of the existing church commenced in 1962, and Bishop Cyril Cowderoy set the ceremonial foundation stone on 9 September. Completed in December 1963, the building was planned by Archard & Partners and erected by local contractors H. Friday & Sons. Distinctive elements include a prominent bell tower and lofty entrance arcades with classical detailing. Two stained-glass windows were rescued from St Fidelis’ Church before that building was demolished in 1989.
