About Church of St. Dunstan, Mayfield
The Church of St. Dunstan, Mayfield is a Church of England parish church serving Mayfield and Five Ashes in East Sussex. It remains an active place of worship, with regular choral services, and is protected as a Grade I listed building.
Founded by St Dunstan in 960, the first church was reportedly built of timber before a Norman stone building replaced it during the 12th century. A fire in 1389 left little beyond the tower, a western lancet and part of the north aisle, prompting reconstruction around 1410–1420. The medieval tower contains the bells and a clock first installed in 1657. Notable fittings include Sussex iron grave slabs, a 1666 octagonal font, a Jacobean carved pulpit and 19th-century Munich glass in the east window. Structural cracks restricted bell ringing in the 1970s, followed by a fourteen-year restoration and the retuning of the bells at Whitechapel.
